Other Social Security Benefits
|
It is well known that not all people claim the state benefits to
which they are entitled. Other State benefits to which you may be
entitled include income support, incapacity benefit, bereavement
payments and bereavement allowance. These are explained briefly
below.
|
Income Support
|
This is a benefit available to anyone over the age of 16 who is
working less than 16 hours a week. This is a means tested benefit
and so will depend on the income you are currently receiving and any
savings you may have above a certain threshold. Contact your local
social security office for more details.
|
Incapacity Benefit
|
This benefit is available to those who have paid a sufficient
amount of NI contributions and have been assessed as incapable of
working. Contact your local social security office for more details
if you think this might apply to you.
|
Bereavement Payment
|
This is a tax-free lump sum of £2,000 payable to the spouse of a
deceased partner. It is only available if the deceased had made a
sufficient amount of NI contributions. It is also required that the
deceased was either not entitled to a State pension or else the
spouse of the deceased was under SPA at the date of death.
|
Bereavement Allowance
|
This is a pension payable for 52 weeks following the death of a
spouse. It can only be claimed if the recipient is over age 45.

you have any doubt as to whether any of these benefits apply to you
